Sliema Sweep Past Qormi to Make Sure of Championship Pool Berth

This was the most important match of the season for the Blues, when they came up against a good Qormi side that was going all out for a victory. However, after a quiet first half, the blues produced a scintillating second half performance to beat Qormi 3-1 and thus confirm their place with the top 6.

Coach Danilo Doncic could not have asked for a better performance from the irresistible Lattes, with also Dani Mitev, making his comeback to the Sliema side after his presence was badly missed when he was suspended for the last 3 games. Trevor Cilia took up his usual role on the wing and played on the left. In defence, there was the Galabov and Mifsud partnership with Clifford Gatt Baldachino and Steve Bezzina lining up on the flanks. The Blues had vice captain Mark Scerri missing due to an injury, together with Andrew Decesare. Both are expected back sometime soon.

Emiliano Lattes and Nikola Bogdanovic were both outstanding for the Blues. Emiliano Lattes scored his first goal since he rejoined Sliema when after a bad back pass by a Qormi defender; Lattes read the ball and acutely lobbed the ball over the Qormi goalkeeper to put the Blues 1-0. Minutes later, a driving run from midfield by Nikola Bogdonavic, put the Blues 2-0 up when Nikola went passed 3 Qormi players to place the ball in the back of the net.

Qormi replied back, when the referee gave a very dubious penalty with a foul committed by Beppe Muscat. Again, another decision went against the Blues and Muscat was yellow carded after coming in as a second half subsititute. From the past, former Sliema player, Josef farruggia put the ball past the Sliema goalkeeper, Henry Bonillo. Minutes later, Beppe Muscat was shown the red card and the Blues were down to 10men.

The Blues continued were they left off, and Danilo Doncic brought in Cameroonian striker, Anicet Eyenga This proved to be a good substitution as minutes later, Ryan Fenech went on a surging run from midfield and squared the ball to Anicet who made no mistake from close range and slotting the ball under the Qormi goalkeeper to make the score a deserving 3-1.

The first objective of the season has been achieved and now the blues will go out to chase that all important European spot. This is what counts and the Blues will expect nothing less than a European place.
