Sliema Fail to Beat Hamrun

The first 25mins of the match were probably the worst the Blues have played this season. Still without the suspended Mitev, Ryan Grech was still sidelined with a hamstring injury together with Andrew Decesare. Josef Mifsud and Clifford GattBaldacchino were also suspended for this encounter.

Doncic opted to partner Steve Bezzina together with Galabov at the heart of defence and Bezzina turned in a very good performance. Beppe Muscat and Alex Muscat were also deployed in the back 4 to form the defence. Mark Scerri returned to the side and together with Bogdanovic and Fenech formed the midfield with Cilia and Lattes on the wings supporting the newly signed striker Anicet Eyenga in attack.

The Blues went a goal down after 17minutes, when the referee gave Hamrun a very dubious foul on the edge of the area and from the resulting freekick, Massimo Grima put Hamrun 1-0 up to give Stefan Sultana, the newly appointed Hamrun coach a dream start.

The Blues reaction was very poor, with Lattes, Cilia and Fenech all failing to provide decent service for the new, tall and powerful Cameroonian striker of Sliema. However, towards the end of the first half, Sliema should have got back on level terms when from a move instigated by Ryan Fenech, with a great ball to Lattes, Lattes dribbled past a Hamrun defender and squared it back to Fenech, only for Fenech to miss a golden opportunity right in front of goal and he mistimed the ball. The Blues also had a very clear penalty towards the end of the first half, when Ronni Hartvig, tripped Cilia with the referee failing to give a penalty.

Sliema came out in the second half a more determined side and Alex Muscat, who also had a decent game yesterday, and keeping Hamrun winger Dean Shields quiet all match, scored the equalizer with a well taken goal. Ryan Fenech got past 2 Hamrun players before exchanging it with Alex Muscat who unleashed an unstoppable shot past the Hamrun goalkeeper to make it 1-1.

After the equalizer, the Blues kept up the rhythm, and ventured forward to get the all important winner. Lattes came all alone in front of the Hamrun goalkeeper but for the second successive match, failed to convert a golden opportunity at a crucial time. Cilia also played a great pass to Jerry Ani, who put the ball inches wide of the Hamrun post with the goalkeeper well beaten. Henry Bonello, also made a couple of outstanding saves with the score at 1-1.

At the end, it was another draw, and the Blues still have plenty to do to confirm a place in the championship pool.
